Coral Reef (2022)
Terra Cotta Clay with Multicolored underglaze and clear glaze
My fascination with natural forms comes from a deep appreciation of the delicate balance found in our environment.
As an environmental studies student, coral reefs are a fascinating example of how many different organisms can create symbiotic balance in an ecosystem. They show us the beauty of interdependence and evidence of human impacts that interrupt and destroy the harmonies of nature’s fine-tuned order.
Cell Dish (2023)
Terra Cotta Clay with slip decoration, Light Blue glaze, Peacock glaze, and Exotic Blue glaze.
As a stem-focused student in the Alpha program at my high school, I spent time studying the structure of cells. The magnificence of cellular design of plants I found in my horticulture class inspired this translation of form into a decorative surface treatment. I used references of plant stem cuttings under a microscope to make the carvings. By carving ravines into the surface of the clay before glazed, the gathering of glaze in these grooves reveals the cellular design underneath.
Switzerland Sun Vase (2022)
Terra Cotta Clay with multicolor underglaze and clear glaze.
As a child, I traveled with my family to Switzerland and our tour bus windows revealed glistening mountain streams as we drove up and up, spiraling to higher mountain elevations. Wrapping the vessel with this layered landscape translates the visual sensation of that experience. The clear overglaze attempts to capture the light-reflective qualities of these vivid sights.
Swirling Slip Plate(2022)
Terra Cotta Clay with white slip and multicolor glaze.
I intended to use this project to experiment with slip decorating and the layering of glazes. I was inspired by vintage ornate decor in my grandmothers home. I wanted to make something glamorous and elegant, fit for a gift to my grandmother. Needless to say she loved it.
Webbed Winter Slip Plate(2022)
Terra Cotta Clay with multicolor slip and clear glaze.
Taking advantage of the centrifugal force at work in wheel throwing, I played with the slip-painting technique and removing slip maunually with my hands as it spun. I discovered a purple color created by the mix reveal of red-brown clay beneath blue slip. I added white slip in rings above everything else. While applying too much in one spot the slip began to drip from one ring to the next. I loved the pattern it created and decided to repeat it around the rest of the plate. Creating an improvised mandala.
